THE MORNING ANTICS

start as you mean to go on

At this part of the day you’ll likely feel every emotion – excitement, nerves, anticipation, you name it! I love to capture these moments as authentically as possible, so I won’t be directing your morning, but I may position you in areas for the best light.

Finding the right “getting ready” location is more important than most people think – so I recommend thinking about this early! Here are my tips for a relaxed morning, and to make the most out of your photos

01  /  NATURAL LIGHT

โ€‹

And LOTS of it! Big windows are ideal for taking portraits of people getting their makeup done, buttoning up their dress and putting their jewellery on. The makeup artist will thank you for the extra light too!

โ€‹

02  /  INTERIOR

โ€‹

The interior of your “getting ready” location will determine the aesthetic of your photos, so make sure to get ready in a space where the interior decor aligns with your own style. This can be the bridal suite at your venue, or if this doesn’t seem the right fit for you, check out local Airbnb’s or hotels.

โ€‹

03  /  SPACE

โ€‹

Make sure the space is plenty big enough for the people you plan to fill it with, including your hair and makeup artists and your photographer – you’d be surprised how quickly a room can fill up!

โ€‹

04  /  CLUTTER FREE

โ€‹

With all the chaos and buzz, it’s easy to find yourself in a cluttered and crowded space. Make sure to get rid of all of the day-to-day clutter like electric wires, messy bench spaces or dog beds. Fill the space with flowers, your favourite decor, and just a couple of your favourite people. Try to have a quick tidy before your photographer arrives too!

05  /  LOVE LETTERS

โ€‹

Why not consider writing a comforting love letter for your fiancé to read before the ceremony? This can really help to settle any nerves, will be a nice little keepsake, make for some incredibly emotion-filled images, and help build the excitement in the leadup to the ‘I-do’s’.

06  /  TIME

โ€‹

Give yourself enough time (this is a big one)! I’ll join you for the finishing touches with hair and makeup, capturing those moments that tell the story of your morning. To save time, make sure to put all of the things aside that I need for the detail shots -  the dress, the suit, ring, shoes, perfume, flowers, the love letters!

For the brides, plan to be getting in your dress around 1 hour before you expect to leave – this gives us time for some final portraits, first looks with dad, photos with your bridesmaids, and time to read your love letter!

โ€‹

TIP: Make sure both you and your bridesmaids have all tried their dresses on ahead of the big day WITH the underwear they plan to wear on the day. I have been caught on several occasions stitching people into their dresses on the morning of the wedding - this can be very time-consuming and takes me away from the job of photographing, but easily avoided if dresses are tried on and adjusted ahead of time.

โ€‹

For the groom, I suggest showering 45 mins before you plan on getting dressed, then chuck some shorts on and chill for a bit. Hopping into your suit straight after a steamy shower guarantees overheating before you even start!

โ€‹

TIP: It's also worth packing a spare shirt to change into halfway through the day to keep you feeling fresh all day long.

โ€‹

07  /  OUTFITS

โ€‹

As an extra finishing touch, the images from your morning can look beautifully cohesive if you and your bridesmaids have matching robes or PJ's to get ready in! They also become very sentimental PJ's!

07  /  FIRST LOOKS

โ€‹

First looks with dad and bridesmaids make for some really gorgeous and sentimental moments together!! I would highly recommend giving yourself the time to do this and breathe in the moment, not be rushed or hassled, you won't regret it!!

A newer trend that’s emerging and shaking off old school traditions, are first looks with your fiancé before the ceremony – and let me tell you, I’M ALL ABOUT IT! This is where you and your partner have a little bit of time together before your ceremony.

โ€‹

These create some really private and intimate, emotion-filled moments between just the two of you, resulting in precious memories (and of course, photographs)! They take away the pressure of seeing each other down the aisle for the first time in front of a packed room. They’re also the perfect opportunity for us to capture some portraits ahead of the ceremony, meaning you have more time to kick off your heels and enjoy a drink with your guests afterwards.

โ€‹

Doing a first look is completely up to you. If you’d like to break the traditions and add a first look into your day – do let me know ahead of time! They are quite time sensitive and we will need to plan this into your timeline.
